MARGIE ELLEN CHRISTMAN, 72, of Columbia City, died at 8:05 p.m., Sunday, September 3, 2006 at Miller's Merry Manor where she had been a resident since October 2005. She had been in failing health for several years.

She was born June 23, 1934 in McRoberts, Kentucky a daughter of Werner and Margie E. (Campbell) Hedrick. In 1944 her family moved to Fort Wayne. She attended Central High School and completed her education at Columbia City High School.

On December 20, 1950 she was united in marriage to Dale R. Christman. They made their home in Fort Wayne and San Bruno, California before moving to Columbia City in 1962. Mr. Christman died April 19, 1995.

She was employed in the meat department at Dale's IGA for many years and retired in 1997 from Dana Weatherhead with 27 years of service.

Her memberships included the Freewill Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star #65 where she served as Worthy Matron from 1972-1973, Eagles Auxiliary #1906 and American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Janice (Randy) Hill and a son, Gene (Karen Jackson) Christman, both of Columbia City; five grandchildren, Sandy (Jim) Straws, Deanna (Jeremy) Weaver, Jason Christman, Angela Metzger and Jared Christman; four great grandchildren, Kimberly Straws, Michael Weaver, Nyha Christman and Andrea Weaver; a brother, Dave (Joann) Sturgill of Milford; four sisters, Ruth Maggard of Kentucky, Margaret (Bill) Kintzel of South Whitley, Mary (Ed) Bunger and Yolanda (James) Couch, both of Columbia City; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Clauden of Bridgman, Michigan and Vera Christman of Pueblo, Colorado.

In addition to her parents, step father, David Sturgill, and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Hedrick and a sister, Katherine Watts.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 7, 2006 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Bill Smith officiating. The burial will be in South Park Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A twilight service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by Order of the Eastern Star #65.
