Walter M. Schneider, 81, a resident of Big Cedar Lake, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2006, at his home. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Born on Jan. 29, 1925, in Columbia City, a son of Melvin and Esther (Wolfe) Schneider, his formative years were spent in Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City High School and received a bachelor's degree from Iowa University.

On July 8, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving the 13th Armored Division during World War II. He was honorably discharged Feb. 12, 1946.

On Feb. 28, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen L. Ogden. They made their first home in Columbia City until 1955, when they moved to their home at Big Cedar Lake.

He was employed at Dana Corporation from 1947 until his retirement in 1982.

His memberships included Columbia City B.P.O.E. 1417, Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 98, where he served as post commander in 1965; V.F.W. 5582, Eagles 1906, Columbia City Lodge 189 F&A.M., Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine and Whitley County Shrine Club.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; a son, Bennie Craig of Goose Lake; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Marge) Schneider of Columbia City, and a sister-in-law, Alice Schneider of Columbia City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Ralph, and a great-grandson.

The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City, with the Rev. Karen Biddle, pastor of West Point Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Columbia City Lodge 189 Free & Accepted Masons will provide a Masonic service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial is at Greenhill Cemetery, with American Legion Post 98 presenting military honors.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.
