Notes:

Lesley Anne Vogel, 61, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on August 11, 2021. She was born in Columbia City, Indiana on December 7, 1959 to the late Warren Dean Clapp and Martha Marilyn Katt.

Lesley attended Columbia City High School where she was a proud member of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Her enthusiasm and smile continued to light up rooms for the rest of her life. She went on to attend Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with an associates degree.

During her time in nursing school she received an award for her sensitivity and compassion, traits she continued to demonstrate throughout her lifelong career. She dedicated her career to caring for others as a Registered Nurse for over 40 years. She spent the majority of her career in cardiac care but more recently found passion working at the transfer center, connecting patients and physicians from outlying hospitals with higher acuity care here in Indianapolis. She absolutely loved being a nurse and working in medicine. It was one of her greatest passions which she passed on to both her daughters- Meredith will begin nursing school this Winter and Carolina graduated medical school in May.

As you may know, Lesley valiantly conquered COVID-19 in May of 2020 after nearly 50 days on a ventilator. She defied the odds and came back from her critical illness with an appetite for living a love-filled life. She took on what she often referred to as her second chance at life with so much gratitude, humility, and vigor. She made amends, travelled, prayed and praised regularly, repaired relationships, laughed very often, dated, and truly grew closer with everyone she loved. Some of her most fun adventures have been in the past 15 months, including a very recent trip to Alaska, a place she’d always wanted to visit. Family is so grateful she also got to attend the wedding of her eldest daughter to her favorite son-in-law, James Held. Though it wasn’t the huge celebration originally planned due to COVID they will always cherish that she was there as they exchanged vows (they even shared their first dance in her living room). She continued to advocate for healthcare workers long after her recovery and her final social media post reads “Please get vaccinated!”.

Lesley loved the finer things in life and always enjoyed dressing up for a nice dinner or gathering, as well as vacationing and exploring God’s creation. Her first stop after arriving in Heaven was likely the Eiffel Tower- she had always hoped to visit Paris. In her last month of life she also visited her favorite place, Traverse City Michigan, where she was surrounded by family and ate delicious lake perch. When not working or traveling she could often be found snuggling one of her three rescue cats- Jackson, Boots, and Princess Lilly. The cats enjoyed watching Hallmark movies with their mom, which she loved all year round but especially at Christmastime.

She took deep pride in her home and in recent years had built and decorated a home she was crazy about in Carmel, Indiana where she resided with Meredith. Every detail was thought out and cherished by Lesley. Visitors were always welcome in her home. She was a great cook and entertained guests without hesitation. She was creative, both in the kitchen and home. Lesley enjoyed and excelled at sewing from a young age, from making clothing (she won best dressed as a senior in high school based on her own designs!) to window treatments to her children’s Halloween costumes, she was always happy to create something new or put together something perfectly coordinating- you may recall her girls’ matching holiday outfits with a smile.

Her girls. Of all her roles and titles, Lesley was most proudly and boldly and excitedly a mother. She was her daughters’ biggest cheerleader. She told anyone who would listen of their accomplishments and spoke with them nearly every day. She never hesitated to go out of their way for them, check in on them, or spoil them with a gift. They miss her already, and know they will have so much to tell her when they join her in heaven.

Lesley is survived by her two devoted daughters, Carolina and Meredith Vogel; her son-in-law James Held; Mother, Martha M. Katt; sisters, Lydia, Mary, and Molly, and a supportive community of loving family and adoring friends. She will be very deeply missed.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 4-8pm at Flanner Buchanan – Geist, 7855 Cork Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46236. Visitation will continue the following day Tuesday, August 17th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8115 Oaklandon Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46236 from 2-3PM with funeral services to begin at 3PM.
