Notes:

Mark D. Miller, 62, formerly of Columbia City, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 15, 2021. After a long, hard-fought, four-year battle with cancer, Mark died peacefully at his home at 5:42 a.m. with his family gathered around him.

He entered into this world on October 13, 1958, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a son of Gaylord and the late Shirley (Hughes) Miller. He grew up in the little village of Tunker in Whitley County and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1977. An accomplished runner in his high school years, he continues to hold the Columbia City High School 100-yard dash record, along with two other relay race records. Mark continued his education at Manchester College, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), he started his career with the prominent Ernst and Young, later moving to North American Van Lines, Fort Wayne, for 14 years. Mark then moved to the Chicago area, working as the Vice President of Tax and Finance at AptarGroup Inc. for 12 years. He retired in 2015 and moved back to the area in 2016.

Mark was a member of The Chapel, Fort Wayne, where he enjoyed ministering with and through “the Mix Singles Community” at The Chapel church. He was a member of the Association of CPAs, he also served on the Board and was Treasurer of the Taxpayers Research Association, and was a former Whitley County School Board Member.

Mark was a proud father of his daughter Katie (Brandon) Mainz. His father, Gaylord (Elaine) Miller of Fort Wayne and his siblings - Timothy (Monica) Miller of Bluffton, MaryBeth (Mike) Johnson of Columbia City, and Rebecca (Rick) Selk of Manteno, Illinois were all very close and held a special bond. Mark was not only a great father, son, and brother, but as an uncle he invested much time in the lives of his nieces and nephews. He spent time helping give wisdom and guidance in their paths of life. He was a compassionate man, who cared for the young and the old. He was always making time for others, and was a hero to many. Julie Reed, from the Chicago area, was a special friend, who Mark loved to spend time with. She was a great support to him during his battle with cancer.

Active throughout his life, he enjoyed hiking and biking, and just being outdoors. His love for the Lord was expanded by taking time to share the evangelistic message to strangers and friends alike. Mark was always thinking of others instead of himself, by serving in many capacities. He was a champion and a warrior of Christ, who was met at the pearly gates with a “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

The funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Columbia City Church of the Nazarene. Burial is at the South Park Annex Cemetery. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, and one hour before the service at the church.

Preferred memorials are to Sugar Creek Fellowship Church, South Whitley.
