Dan Speed, 70, of Beaumont, CA passed away Friday, August 26, 2016. He was born September 1, 1945 in Pensacola, Florida to Harvey & Irene Speed. Following graduation from Western Michigan University in April 1967 he married his college sweetheart Marilynn Mowrey.

He entered the Aviation Officers Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy in September 1967. Designated a Naval Flight Officer in June 1968. Dan was ordered to VP 50 at Moffett Field, California. He deployed in the P-3 Orion aircraft to the Philippines and Cam Ranch Bay. From 1971 to 1975 he served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Patrol Wings, U.S. Pacific Fleet at NAS Moffett Field, California. During the next two years Dan served in the Air Department aboard the USS John F. Kennedy air craft carrier.

In July 1977 he returned to Moffett Field as training officer in VP 31 and in 1980 he reported to VP46 as operations officer and deployed to Keflavik, Iceland. He continued to stay at Moffett Field for two more assignments. First as Executive Officer in VP 31 and then as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VP 48 with deployments to Misawa, japan and Adak, Alaska.

In January 1986 Dan assumed command of Navy Recruiting District, New Orleans. In 1987 Navy Recruiting District New Orleans won honors as Navy Recruiting District of the year.

In June 1988 Dan reported back to Moffett Field. He was promoted to Captain in 1989 and assumed command of NAS Moffett Field. Captain Speed finished his Navy career as Commanding Officer of Navy Recruiting District, San Diego where he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

He retired to Pensacola with his wife Marilynn. They lived there for four years, then moving to Patagonia, Arizona for 15 years and finally to Beaumont, California.

While in the Navy, Dan had many interests in sports and physical fitness. In July, 1979 Dan and a friend John Baughman stationed together in VP 31 took a 700 mile bicycle trek from Canada to San Diego as a tribute to the Navy. In 1983 Dan and a team of four from Moffett Field took first place in the Blue Angel Marathon. In 1984 Dan won the Moffett Field Intramural Triathlon. On October 6, 1985 Dan participated in the Alcatraz Challenge Triathlon. He placed 35 out of 106 athletes. Dan did this event 2 more times. Dan’s love of motorcycles began back at Moffett Field when he purchased his first Harley and he continued to ride for many years in California, Florida and Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey & Virginia Speed of Pensacola. He is survived by his wife, Marilynn of Beaumont, California; his sister, Dianna Speed of Pensacola; his brother and sister-in-law, James and Carolyn Speed of Pensacola and Nephew, Joseph Speed and family in Scottsdale, AZ.

Dan lived his life with integrity and zeal and always with the motto “Full Speed Ahead”. Any donations can be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131.
