Notes:

Susan Kauffman, 67, died April 6, 2013, after four years of living with cancer. Susan was born Jan. 13, 1946, in Indianapolis to Donald Alberty and Betty Robison Alberty. As an infant, she moved with her parents to Columbia City.

She married her high school boyfriend, Robert Kauffman, Aug. 31, 1968, in Goshen. Following their graduation from Purdue University in 1969, Susan and Bob moved to Columbia, Mo. where Bob had a job as a parole officer with the Missouri State Board of Probation and Parole.

In Columbia, Susan worked as an advertising copywriter for Neds and Wardlow Advertising Agency, which later became Batz-Hodgson-Neuwoehner, Inc. She left that position when her daughter was born in 1980.

In 1984, she returned to work and spent 28 years at the University of Missouri, mostly in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. When she retired in 2012, she was Executive Staff Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.

Susan was in community theater in Columbia, along with her husband and daughter. She appeared in over 25 productions at Columbia Entertainment Company and the Maplewood Barn Theater during the 1980s and '90s.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Kauffman of New York City; mother, Betty Alberty of Indianapolis; brother, Joe (Erica) Alberty of Fort Wayne; nephew, Michael of Fort Wayne; mother-in-law, Margaret Kauffman of Columbia City; brother-in-law, John (Sue) Kauffman of Columbia City; two nephews, Chris Kauffman of Huntington and Kenyon Kauffman of Louisville, Ky.; and four nieces, Leander, Kinsey, Corinne and Selma, all of Columbia City.

She was preceded in death by her husband; father; brother-in-law, Kraig Kauffman; and father-in-law, Kenyon Kauffman.

There will be no services or internment. Susan arranged to donate her body to the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri School of Medicine for the instruction of medical students. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity benefiting children or animals, or by "simply smiling and speaking kindly to someone each day. Send your light into the universe in whatever ways you can."
