Michael Eugene Mitchell, age 62, died at 7:47 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007 in the Emergency Room at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, IN. Mr. Mitchell had recently been diagnosed with cancer, however his death was unexpected. He was born on November 1, 1944 in Wolf Lake, Noble County, IN to Walter E. and Phyliis E. (Phend) Mitchell.

He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1963. As a small child he helped his parents with the daily management of their family business, Mitchell's Bait and Tackle. As a teenager he worked at Cooks Ten Pin setting bowling pins. He then was employed at Weatherhead Company for a brief time before becoming a licensed insurance agent. He worked for Prudential Life Insurance Company where he was honored as the top selling agent numerous times, and awarded the Million Dollar Roundtable Salesperson of the Year. He later worked at White Automotive in Columbia City as a supervisor. He finally was employed as a lead operator at Monsanto (currently known as Silgan Plastics) in Ligonier, IN, and retired from there in October of 1999. He spent most of his lifetime in Whitely County where he was once a minor league baseball coach and at one time involved with racing at Avilla Speedway. He was an avid bowler in the 1960's and 70's, competing in numerous bowling leagues and tournaments. He was one pin short of bowling a perfect game with a score of 289 at the ABC (American Bowling Conference) sanctioned tournament in Knoxville, TN. He also enjoyed fishing, landscaping and gardening, mushroom hunting, and collecting antiques, especially antique bottles.

Survivors include his mother, Phyllis E. Mitchell, Columbia City, IN; 2 daughters, Julie Marie (Neil) Parrett, Fort Wayne, IN and Laurie Elizabeth (James) Davis, Columbia City, IN; 1 son, Daniel Patrick (Beth) Mitchell, Columbus, OH; 2 brothers, James Edward Mitchell, Upland, CA and Kevin Dale Mitchell, Columbia City, IN and 1 sister, Katherine Ann (Richard) Ackley, Columbia City, IN; 5 granddaughters including, Meghan and Emily Hogan, Jenna Leazier, Olivia Davis, all of Columbia City, IN and Madison Mitchell, Columbus, OH and one baby grandchild Mitchell, expected in October 2007; 2 step grandsons, Curtis Parrett, Columbia City and James Davis, Pierceton, IN and 5 step grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Mitchell who passed away on May 30, 2006, 1 son, Michael Wayne Mitchell who passed away on October 22, 1963 and 1 brother, Patrick Allen Mitchell who passed away in 1948.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Thurow of the Troy Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at the Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City, IN. Memorial bequest may be given in Mr. Mitchell's memory to the American Cancer Society or to the donor's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
