Linda Jayne (Gates) Vandivier Sabo, 72, succumbed to a long bout with cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis.

She was born in Fort Wayne on April 7, 1940, to Jayne (Sample) and Benton Earl Gates Sr. and grew up in Columbia City. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1958.

In 1962, she graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she studied radio, television and film. There, she was initiated as a member of the Xi Chapter of Chi Omega Sorority.

After graduation, she worked as an assistant buyer at the L.S. Ayres & Co. flagship store in downtown Indianapolis. In 1966, she worked in public relations for the Indiana Sesquicentennial Commission.

In 1984, she began work as an administrative assistant to history, economics and accounting departments and to the Roger D. Branigin chair of history at Franklin College, retiring in 1994.

She served as president of the board of the Franklin Symphonic Council and president of the Franklin Swimming and Diving Club Boosters and was a longtime board member in several capacities of the Charlotte Emerson Club.

Her first husband, Richard W. Vandivier, preceded her in death on March 4, 1998. They were married in 1966 and have three surviving children, Hugh Vandivier, 44, of Indianapolis, David Vandivier, 42, of Washington and Miriam Metzinger (nee Mary-Jayne Vandivier), 41, of Jerusalem, Israel; and five surviving grandchildren. She also is survived by her stepdaughters from Richard's first marriage, Elizabeth Vandivier of Washington and Jennifer Corry of Sacramento, Calif.; and seven stepgrandchildren.

She married her surviving husband, William Julius Sabo, 75, on April, 26, 2003. Also surviving are six stepchildren, Michael Sabo, 52, of Chicago; Gregory Sabo, 50, of Dayton, Ohio, Timothy Sabo, 48, of Hollywood, Calif., Monica Figler, 48, of Jupiter, Fla., Jerome Sabo, 47, of Schererville, and Stephen Sabo, 44, of Chicago; and eight stepgrandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 500 E. 42nd St. in Indianapolis. Visitation and wake will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Burial arrangements are pending.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Pelvic Reconstruction Research Fund, with donations payable to Memorial Sloan-Kettering, to MSKCC, c/o Jane Weyl, 633 Third Ave., 28th Floor, New York, NY 10017.
