Joe A Kreider, 75, a Columbia City native, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2014 at Hendricks Regional Health, Danville where he was admitted on Sunday after suffering a stroke.

He was born October 18, 1938 in Washington Township, Whitley County a son of Howard D. and Opale S. (Salesman) Kreider. His formative years were spent in Washington Township where he started high school, transferring to Columbia City Joint High School his junior year, graduating with the Class of 1957.

On July 16, 1960 he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged February 28, 1966.

On June 18, 1961 he was united in marriage to Erma M. Slessman. They made their home in South Whitley, Huntington, Union OH, Grayson KY, Tomkinsville KY and Fort Wayne until four years ago when they moved to Coatesville.

He was employed at Weatherhead, Bellboy Boat Co., managed W.T. Grant in Huntington, Ben Franklin Store and hotels in Fort Wayne before establishing J & E Carpet Cleaning.

A former volunteer fireman for South Whitley - Cleveland Township Fire Department, he was also a volunteer volleyball coach at North Putnam Middle School.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Erma; a daughter, Tara (Henry) Angermeier of Bainbridge; two granddaughters, Madison & Alexandra; and a sister, Donna (Kenneth) Rubrake of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Todd Kreider; five brothers, Martin, Russell, Richard, Paul and Rex; and a sister, Joyce Ann Martin.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery with military honors presented. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
