LeRoy L. Hawn, 83, of rural Columbia City, died at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Miller's Merry Manor.

He was born February 7, 1934 in Allen County, Indiana a son of Charles A. and Florence A. (Sievers) Hawn. His formative years were spent Fort Wayne until as a seventh grader, his family moved to Columbia Township, Whitley County. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1952.

On March 30, 1955 he enlisted in the United States Army. While serving at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he completed Wheel Vehicle Mechanics School and Track Vehicle Mechanics Armored School.

On June 8, 1955 he was united in marriage to Catherine A. Kyler. Following his active duty discharge from Colorado Springs, Colorado, they made their home in Union Township, Whitley County until 1963 when they moved to Columbia Township.

In addition to farming, from May 1957 until July 1961 he worked for J. I. Case Co. In July 1961 he became a mail carrier in Columbia City, transferring to a rural route until his retirement in November 1990.

He attended Oak Grove Church of God and was a member of Rural Letter Carrier Association, Neighborhood Extension Organization and was formerly a Columbia Township Volunteer Fireman. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and reading.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Kate; five daughters, Susan (Rex) Manor, Lyndah (Henry Brown) Jones, Carol (Richard "Butch") Winebrenner, Jenny (Roger) Grable and Jo Ella (Joseph "Chuck") Murphy, all of Columbia City; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Arline Aukerman of St. Mary's OH and Mary Ellen Walters of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael "Mike" Hawn; and two brothers, David Hawn and Kenneth LaVern Hawn.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Grove Church of God, 2426 South Raber Road, Columbia City with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Preferred memorials are to Bear Lake Church Camp or Oak Grove Church of God.
