Dean A. Ramsey, 84, of Columbia City, died at 7 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at The Hearth of Sycamore Village where he had been a resident since November 2016.

He was born August 13, 1932 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a son of Earld and Hertha (Robinett) Ramsey. His formative years were spent in Columbia City. He graduated in 1950 from Columbia City High School.

After high school, he worked for Williams Grocery four years and General Electric a year. On October 1, 1952 he began working for the United State Postal Service, retiring in 1988 with 36 years of service as a rural mail carrier.

On February 11, 1953 he was inducted into the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged January 12, 1955.

On October 7, 1956 he was united in marriage to Norma J. Hennessey. They have always made their home in Columbia City.

His memberships include Columbia City United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #98 where he was a former commander, V.F.W. Post #5582, Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard and Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Surviving relatives include his wife of over 60 years, Norma; two sons, Alan D. (Dawn) Ramsey and Perry L. (Lori) Ramsey, all of Columbia City; four grandchildren, Justin (Emily) Ramsey, Tyler (Amy Smith) Ramsey, Jennifer (Nick) Mata and Jessica (Patrick) Chung; eight great grandchildren; and a brother, Gary (Carol) Black of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father, Therrol Black; and a step brother, Nelson Black.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Preferred memorials are to Columbia City United Methodist Church.
