Roy D. Smith, 81, of Elyria, died on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at University Hospital in Cleveland, following a long illness. Roy was born on September 7, 1929 in Columbia City, Indiana and lived in Elyria since 1955.

He was a graduate of Columbia City High School with the class of 1947. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was employed by the F.A.A. in Oberlin as a Manager in the Automation Department for 31 years, retiring in 1986. He was a life member and past commander (1968-1969) of the American Legion, Post 12, where he served as Secretary of the Legion Golf League for many years and was also a member of 40 & 8. He belonged to the Frank S. Harmon Masonic Lodge, # 663, where he served as chairman of DeMolay and received the Cross of Honor. He also served as chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Chapter in Lorain County and was active with Boy Scouts of America Troop 150 at St. Agnes.

He is survived by his wife, Gerri Collins Smith of Elyria; one son, Timothy (Raquel) Smith and one daughter, Gayle Ann (Darryl) Bally, both of Elyria; two step-daughters, Michelle (Michael) Siwerka and Stephanie Moore Winningham; one step-son, Brian Winningham, all of Elyria; eleven grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Williams of Huntington, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann M. Smith in 1992; and his parents, Arthur D. and Edith M. (nee Kunbergar) Smith.

Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 10 A.M. with the Reverend Charles Keesee, Pastor of Midway Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio with full military honors provided by VFW Post 1079.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, 706 Haddonfield Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.
