Edward "Ed" Franklin Smith Sr., 79, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 1:00 AM at his residence in Avilla. He was born November 12, 1928 in Ormas, Indiana to Chauncey and Rozella (Schaetzier) Smith. They preceed him in death.

He spent 40 years of his life in the Noble County area. Graduated from Columbia City High School in the class of 1946. On February 19, 1949, he married Janis Marie Riecke, she died on October 16, 2001.

Mr. Smith was a farmer for 59 years. He was a good hearted, hard working man, who loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Eagles AERIE No. 1906 in Columbia City and the National Rifle Association. Also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avilla.

Surviving are a son, Edward F. (Vicki) Smith Jr. of Avilla. Daughters, Marilyn (Thomas) Myers of Avilla, Teresa (Howard) Eicher of Avilla, Rose (Tim) Schafer of Fort Wayne, Rita (Lloyd) Treesh of Avilla, Mary Kay (Vincent) Helmkamp of Kendallville, Doris (John) Hartman of Fort Wayne, Susan (Mark) Hartman of Columbia City, Connie (Mitch) Blotkamp of Avilla.

Grandchildren, Lucy Smith,Sylvia Smith, Jennifer Lemen, Joseph Myers, Alaina Eicher, Andrea Harmeyer, Amy Eicher, Sarah Tyler, Katie Haas, Ryan Treesh, Angie Kiracofe, Jill Dunkel, Todd Helmkamp, Beth Lunz, Brian Hartman, Jody Hartman, Matthew Hartman, and Tiffany Mason. 17 great grandchildren. A sister, MAry (Ivan) Blaugh of Columbia City, a brother, Paul (Janet) Kile of Columbia City, and a sister-n-law, Gayle Kile of Columbia City.

He is preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, three infant children, Joseph, Carol and Rebecca, and a brother, Larry Kile.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. MAry's Catholic Church in Avilla with Father Edward Erpelding officiating. Calling will be today from 6-8 PM, Friday from 1-5 and 6-8 PM at Brazzell Funeral Home, 530 North Main St., Avilla. Calling is also one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery in Columbia City.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or School.
