Robert Edward Grable, 77, of Columbia City (Big Lake), died at 1:01 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at his Big Lake residence.

Born on Dec. 1, 1928, at Wolf Lake in Noble County, a son of Homer D. and Ruth Alice (Barr) Grable, he was raised in Noble and Whitley counties. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1946, and lived most of his adult life in Columbia City.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952.

He married Reva M. Banks Birchum on Jan. 3, 1982, in Columbia City.

Retiring in 1976 from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 30-plus years of service, he worked for three years as a broker for Bohn and Grable Real Estate in Columbia City. He was also the former secretary/manager of the Eagles Lodge 1906 in Columbia City for 21 years.

He was a member of the Columbia City Masonic Lodge 189, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine 3185 of Fort Wayne, American Legion Post 98 and Moose Lodge 1063.

Survivors include his wife, Reva M. Grable; three sons, Barry (Karen) Grable of Fort Wayne; Roger (Jenny) Grable and Dennis Grable of Columbia City; a step-daughter, Kim Jo Jefferson of Tollbour, Ky.; three step-sons, Jammy C. (Kim) Birchum of Morgantown, N.C.; Chris Edward (Debbie) Birchum of Columbia City, and Steven G. Birchum of Monroe, Ga.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wanda Rock; and a brother, Richard D. Grable.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive in Columbia City. Eagles Lodge 1906 will provide a twilight memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Smith, of Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. Burial is at Thorn Cemetery, Ormas.

Memorial bequests may be given in Mr. Grable's memory to the American Heart or American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
