JOHN T. COWEN, 83, a resident of Columbia City, died at 2:48 pm Saturday, September 11, 2010 in the Parkview , Fort Wayne.

He was born on September 18, 1926 in Fort Wayne, a son of Theodore Cowen and Ilene Snyder. His formative years were spent in Columbia City where he was raised by foster parents, Purl and Wilma Schoeff. After graduating from the Columbia City High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served during W. W. II .

Following his discharge from military duty in October 1946, he started his employment with the Whitley Products Company as a purchasing agent and completed twenty-five years of service.

On August 6, 1960, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Woosley and they have always made their home in the Columbia City area. They resided at Goose Lake for several years where they owned and operated the Goose Lake Resort, later the Wolf Lake Bar and then the Crossroads Inn in Ligonier. He retired from United Technology as a purchasing agent.

He was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #98. He enjoyed golf and was an avid horse shoe pitcher and was also a regular member of the Grace Lutheran Church Men's Breakfast Club.

The surviving relative include his wife, Norma; a son, Doug (Barb) Cowen, Columbia City; a daughter, Linda Slone Needler, North Webster; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a great great granddaughter and his son in law, Larry Needler.

The funeral service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday in the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with the Rev. Gene Rohrer, pastor of the Oak grove United Methodist Church, officiating. The burial will be in the South Park Cemetery with the North Webster American Legion Post presenting the graveside honors. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Wednesday.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
