Miriam Sue Haas, 88, Seneca, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Sue was born on July 14, 1926, to Edwin F. and Alice R. Geiger Cassaday in Huntington, Indiana. She graduated from Columbia City High School in Columbia City, Indiana. After graduating, she attended Jordon Conservatory of Music at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

She moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1949, where she met William H. Haas; they were married on September 3, 1950. The couple moved often, due to Bill's teaching career; they settled in Arkansas City, Kansas in 1957, where they lived and raised their family until 1965. During those years Sue was a stay home mom but was very instrumental in setting up the local Association for Mentally Handicapped Children.

In 1965, they moved to Seneca, where they continued to live until her death (except for one year from May of 1968 to August of 1969 when Bill was called to active duty at Ft. Carson, Colorado).

Bill and Sue celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2000 just prior to Bill's death.

Sue was involved in setting up Head Start Program in Nemaha County, acting as the director and teaching for 1 year. After returning to Seneca in 1969 she was employed by the Area Agency on Aging and helped organize and run the local nutrition center. She continued as the bookkeeper at the nutrition center until her retirement in 1991. She is also remembered as the Avon lady for many rural customers in the 1970's.

She was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Seneca and later she joined the New Hope Baptist in Seneca.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Haas on September 25, 2000; a son, Mark A. Haas on May 18, 2013; a daughter, Linda Jordan in 2006; and a grandson, David R. Wiltfong, Jr. on March 12, 2007.

Survivors are her five sons, Dan Haas of Overland Park, Kansas, Charles Haas of Plano, Texas, John and Fritz Haas, both of Seneca, and Steven Haas of Dalesville, Alabama; a daughter, Kathie Wiltfong of Seneca; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday evening, from 7 to 8 P.M. at Lauer Funeral Home. A graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd at 2 P.M. at the Seneca City Cemetery in Seneca. The family will meet at the Lauer Funeral Home for a procession to the cemetery.

Memorials are for the Alzheimer Association sent in care of the family.
