Jean I. Tenney, 88, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Parkview Regional Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born June 2, 1925 in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of Owen R. Zumbrun and Fern Quinn Zumbrun. In 1943 she graduated from Columbia City High School, and entered nurse's training at St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago. In 1946 she received her RN degree as a part of the WWII Cadet Nurse Corps. She worked as a registered nurse at Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake, as a plant nurse for Blue Bell, in general and private duty at Linvill Memorial Hospital, and as office nurse for Dr. John Vogel. She worked as head nurse at Miller's Merry Manor for almost 20 years, and in 1983 was named employee of the year.

She had a generous heart for serving others, both in her nursing profession and as a member of the community. In 1955, along with two others, Jean established the American Red Cross Chapter of Whitely County. In 1997 she served as a nurse on a medical mission trip to Guatemala. For more than 10 years, she was known as "The Bread Lady" for her service with the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church food pantry. She was awarded the Mother Teresa coin for her volunteer service to help the hungry.

She was a vibrant and active member of New Life Bible Church in Columbia City.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Lynn Tenney (Ron) Heitritter of Seattle WA; two sons, Tom (Linda) Tenney of Bovey MN and Bob (Brenda) Tenney of Columbia City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Sanders and Annabel Hanna, both of Ft. Wayne.

Jean was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Zumbrun Schrader and a brother, Bob Zumbrun.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith Funeral Home in Columbia City. The burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the New Life Bible Church Food Outreach.
