Notes:

Norbert Groves passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 3rd. He was born in Parkston, South Dakota in 1924 to Gail and Marion (Gorman) Groves and was the 3rd oldest of 10 children.

The family moved to Indiana after the dust bowl of the 1930's.

Norbert served in WW2 and was a decorated sailor who flew multiple missions flying in torpedo bombers and dive bombers in the South Pacific. His aircraft carrier was hit by 2 kamikazes in the late stages of the war and some of his last missions involved bombing the Mitsubishi factories on the mainland of Japan. The war had a lasting impact on him and he never forgot his comrades.

Norbert met the love of his life at a card party in Fort Wayne, Indiana after the war in the late 1940's. He married Marilyn Everts in 1949 and they settled in Fort Wayne and had 5 children.

He and Marilyn's love of travel took them all over the country, often with all five kids in the back of a station wagon with the trusty Trotwood trailer in tow. Norbert worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad (which eventually became Conrail) before the war and continued his career until he retired in his early sixties.

Upon retirement Marilyn and he moved to Summerville, South Carolina and traveled abroad regularly.

Norbert was also an avid bridge player, enjoying regular duplicate games with his sons. He had what bridge players call "great card sense" and while being competitive, he was always gracious, whether a winner or a loser.

Norbert is survived by Marilyn Groves, his wife of 64 years and 5 children, Darwin Groves and wife Kathy, (English, IN), Eric Groves (San Francisco, CA), Linda Grosser and husband Randy (Indianapolis, IN), Kevin Groves and wife Chris, (Chicago IL), and Dan Groves (Bloomington, IN). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Colleen Groves, Lee Groves, Wade Groves, Ryan Wynder, Stephanie Wynder Newell, Emily Wynder, Mark Grosser, Mitchell Grosser, Natalie Grosser, Zachary Grosser, Kirsten Groves, Ethan Groves, Eli Groves, Kalie Groves, Adam Mix, and Erin Mix. He also has 13 great grandchildren.

Other surviving family members include brother Denny Groves, and sisters Lorraine Tebay and Dorothy Harder.

He was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Eldon Groves (son of Eric Groves), and Jess Grosser (son of Linda and Randy Grosser) and by siblings Larry Groves, Jerry Groves, Joan Pola, Patsy Fleichman, Mary Ellen Reiff, and Tom Groves.

Visitation will be from 1:30-3:30 pm, Sunday September 8th with a memorial service to follow immediately at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street in Bloomington Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
