Walter E. Mitchell, 84, of Columbia City, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at The Oaks Living Center in Columbia City.

Born in Columbia City on Oct. 25, 1921, he was a son of Clarice M. and Sarah Goldie (Killian) Mitchell. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1940, and spent his entire lifetime in Whitley County.

He was married to Phyllis E. Phend on a snowy winter day, Dec. 6, 1942, at the bride's parents home, by the Rev. Edward E. Dewitt of the Larwill Methodist Church.

He was a machinist and storekeeper for Monsanto Plastic Company in Ligonier, where numerous plastic products, including mud flaps for trucks, were made. He retired in 1984, after 20 years of service. He was also co-owner and assisted with the family business, Mitchell's Bait & Tackle in Columbia City for 23 years.

He was a former member of Gospel Land Ministries, Indianapolis Post Card Club, Worldwide International Federation of Post Card Dealers and the Findley Antique Bottle Club. An avid bowler, retiring in 1974, he was one of the city's top bowlers and was a collector of post cards since 1971.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Katherine Anne (Rich) Ackley of Columbia City; three sons, Michael Eugene Mitchell of Columbia City; James Edward Mitchell of Upland, Calif., and Kevin Dale (Beverly) Mitchell of Columbia City; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarice (Elsie) Mitchell of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Patrick Allen Mitchell; a grandson and two sisters, Ethel B. Nicodemus and Naomi E. Trier.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. The funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Thurow of Troy Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial is at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City.

Memorial bequests may be given in Mr. Mitchell's memory to Whitley County Senior Citizens. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
