James E. Hull, M.D., 83, of Lafayette, died at 4:43 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital at Carmel.

Born in Columbia City on Nov. 19, 1922, a son of E. Wayne and Marguerite (Lancaster) Hull, he graduated from Columbia City High School in 1940. He graduated from Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1943 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1946.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md.

After his discharge in 1949, he was in general practice in Wolcott for two years. He was granted a Fellowship in Surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and began his general surgical practice in Lafayette in January, 1955, retiring in 1993.

He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of Tippecanoe County Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Central Surgical Association, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and Pan Pacific Surgical Association.

He served as president of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons from 1973-74, served as president of St. Elizabeth Medical Staff and was formerly chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth and Home Hospitals. For several years during the 1970s and 1980s, he sponsored and traveled with a medical team to perform surgery in a remote area of Haiti.

He was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, the John Purdue Club and Purdue Alumni Association.

His wife Virginia "Ginny" Caldwell Hull, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jay (Rhea) Hull of Miami, Fla.; and Brad Hull of Mt. Prospect, Ill.; a daughter, Christine Hull of Mt. Prospect; a step-son, Mark (Sandra) Jones of Arcadia; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a sister, Elizabeth Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.

There is no visitation. A memorial service is at 4 p.m. on Sept. 8, at St. Johns Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Edward J. Tourangeau officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to a charity of donors choice.
