Robert R. Sharp, 89, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away March 4, 2010 at his home. He was born July 13, 1920 in Columbia City to Joe and Freeda (Decker) Sharpe.

He married Josephine Robb in December 1945 and she preceded him in death in 1980.

Mr. Sharpe graduated from Columbia City High School in 1939. He was a trumpet player and won several state and national high school awards receiving a full scholarship to Moorehead State College with a bachelors degree in music. He earned a masters degree at Colorado State University.

In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and was in the 312 Bomb group, nicknamed "The Grim Reapers," and had the opportunity to play trumpet in Bob Hope's band, when Hope toured various bases in New Guinea.

Mr. Sharp taught music in Kentucky, Illinois and Columbia City. He was music supervisor at Goshen High School retiring in 1982 with 35 years teaching. He was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.

He was a member of Rotonda American Legion Post 113 and VFW Post 10476.

He is survived by his wife, Annette (Cox) Sharpe whom he married March 26, 1981; daughters, Sandy (Dennis) Caprarotta of Bradford, Pa. and Cathy (Bruce) Kurtz of Syracuse; sister, Jeanice (Norman) Graves of Columbia City; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine, parents and a brother, Dean Sharpe.

On July 13, a Celebration of Life will be held in Plymouth on what would have been his 90th birthday. Another Celebration of Life will be held in December at the American Legion Post 113, Rotonda, with internment in the Sarasota, Fla. Veterans Administration National Cemetery.

Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Rotonda American Legion Post 113, the Englewood Florida Tide Well Hospice, the Marshall County, Ind. Humane Society, or the Rotonda VFW Post 10476.
