Lt. Col. James (Jim) Obermiller passed away Jan. 30, 2013, in San Antonio, TX. He was born June 30, 1921, in Ft. Wayne.

After high school, he was selected to attend the Army Air Corps Pilot Training program. He became one of the first class of enlisted pilots, followed by his commission as an officer and assignment to the 339th Fighter Squadron, flying P-38s in the South Pacific.

In Nov. 1942, he was credited with shooting down a Japanese Zero during a combat mission over the Solomon Islands. He was awarded the Air Medal and later, two more, while being cited with the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, among numerous other decorations during his military career.

Further duties included a tour with the 49th Fighter Group at Taegu, Korea, and later with the Titan Missile Program, culminating in more than twenty years of military service.

Upon retirement from the Air Force, he worked for Mason & Hanger, Silas Mason Company, Lexington, Ky. for thirty-five years as assistant to the president and corporate security.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn H. Obermiller.

He is survived by two sons, retired Air Force Colonel Terry Lee (Candy) Obermiller and Robert Alan (Kate) Obermiller, artist and quality assurance professional; a daughter, Lynne Ann (Alan) Obermiller Landreth, a retired administrative assistant; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at High Flight Chapel, Air Force Village II, 5100 John D. Ryan Blvd.
A military burial service for the family will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Air Force Village Foundation, San Antonio, TX.

Cecelia Evelyn Hood

Obermiller left this earth on May 8, 2009 after 88 years, despite living with a debilitating disease for the latter part of her life.

Beginning in High School, continuing through attendance at the University of Maryland and a brief business career, she was known as an accomplished pianist and instrumentalist as well as serving as music director in several churches at various times in her lifetime.

Married to Lt. Col. James E. Obermiller in April 1942, she accompanied him for over 20 years during service in the US Air Force as well as a succeeding 35 year career in private life. An enthusiastic quilter, florist and piano accompanist, her talents in these areas were well recognized.

Evelyn is survived by her husband; two sons, retired Air Force Colonel Terry Lee Obermiller, Robert Alan Obermiller, an executive serving in the oil services industry, and daughter, Lynne Ann Obermiller Landreth, an administrative assistant for a children's author. Additionally, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren will mourn her passing.

A Memorial Service will be held in the High Flight Chapel at Air Force Village II at 2 p.m. May 13, 2009 following a family burial service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, tributes may be donated to the Freedom House Alzheimer's Research Fund at Air Force Village II, San Antonio, TX.
