Notes:	Atalene Kessie DeRuyter, 89, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at her daughter's home near Benton Harbor, Mich. Born in Whitley County on Oct. 20, 1919, she was the daughter of Ray and Frances (Grable) Kessie. She graduated from Columbia City High School. She was married June 15, 1944 to Cornelius (Connie) DeRuyter and they both served for awhile as Salvation Army officers in Michigan. He died February 2008. Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Charles) Moser of Watervliet, Mich. and Deborah (William) Tenter of Coloma, Mich.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Linda) Kessie of Crossville, Tenn. and a local survivor, sister-in-law, Barbara Kessie of Columbia City. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine (Archie) Smith and Mary Ellen Kessie and a brother, Gerald Kessie. The funeral was held in Watervliet, Mich. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Midway Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Light Bearers Association or Midway Baptist Church c/o Red Arrow Highway, Watervliet, MI 49098. October 9, 2006 note: Retired, work in our church.
