Loses Son in Pacific War
Pilot A. M. Goebel Killed In Action

Navy Aviation Pilot Albert Morton Goebel, 23 years old, a son of G. L. Goebel, of Cape Girardeau, has lost his life in the fighting in the Pacific, his father has been advised.

Pilot Goebel, born at Big Heart, Okla., on Sept. 2, 1919, had not lived here, but had visited in Cape Girardeau. His father visited him in Florida two years ago.

The officer was married in January, 1941, at Pensacola, Fla., to Miss Vera Conn, and she is residing at Pensacola.

Word That Goebel was killed "in combat with the enemy," came to his wife from the commanding officer of Naval Patrol Squadron No. 91, to which Pilot Goebel had been attached. Mrs. Goebel had heard from him last on Oct. 18, when he was based at Honolulu, G. L. Goeble said. Official word has not yet come from the Navy Department.

He started his training six years ago at Great Lakes Training Station, then was sent to Norfolk, Va., with the next training at Key West, Fla., and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After that he was stationed at Corpus Christi, Tex., and got his wings on March 15, 1942, at Pensacola. From there he was transferred to the Pacific Coast, and to Honolulu.

The young officer is survived by his wife, his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Goebel, who reside at 916 Independence street; his mother, who resides in Indiana; and a half-sister; Shirlene Goebel, 14, also of the Independence street address.

Additional info: Was in U.S. Navy as Aviation Pilot Second Class & received a Purple Heart Medal. Listed on the Honolulu Monument (aka Courts of the MIssingn World War II) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Obituary also in Columbia City Post November 23, 1942, Pg 1 and November 24, 1942, Pg 3.
