Graduated from MacMurray College in 1940 with a B.S. in Zoology. She was a post-graduate of the first Occupational Therapy Class in the U.S. in 1948 at the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy, going on to work with cerebral palsy patients & Easter Seals.

She also worked on professional and volunteer levels in the Girl Scouts, designing and leading programs for 33 years. Gayle had a lifetime commitment to her Church, leading Women's Society and charity programs where she organized annual craft bazaars, mission, and outreach programs.

Gayle and Lew travelled extensively, enjoying their love of golf.

She was preceded in death by husband Lewis, married 52 years; sister, Helen; and brother, Robert.

She is survived by daughters Linda Canizales and Karen Tewart; son Gary Zwissler; and their families, including grandsons Zachary Canizales, Brian Tewart, Owen Tewart, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Gayle married Lewis Edward Zwissler (October 1, 1916 to January 24, 2000), a brilliant rocket scientist, in 1948. They had one son, Gary Edward Zwissler; 2 daughters, Linda Gayle Zwissler, Karen Ruth Zwissler.

They were living in Carlsbad, California when Lewis passed on in January 2000 from Alzheimer's in a nursing home in Encinitas, California. He had a stellar career working on the Manhattan project, designing turbines for GE; designing cars at Ford; helping design the Polaris missile which was fired from a submarine; working on the numerous rocket propulsion systems which resulted in putting men on the moon; integral in the design of the Mark 46 topedo; managing fast breeder nuclear reactors at Arrgone National Laboratory; consulting on Quality Assurance during the building of nuclear reactors around the U.S. and on the Yucca Mountain Project in Nevada.

NOTE: Lewis is sometimes listed as Edward Lewis Zwissler.
