George R. "Dick" Walter, age 98, of Gibson City died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Gibson Area Hospital Annex in Gibson City [Illinois].

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gibson City, with Father Thomas Tenneth officiating. A celebration of his life will follow at his home, 412 E. 3rd St., Gibson City. Private burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery in Gibson City.

Mr. Walter was born April 22, 1918, in Columbia City, IN, a son of George E. and Myrtle Thompson Walter. He married Geraldine "Gere" Spellman on Oct. 2, 1943, at McDill Air Force Field Tampa, FL. She died May 5, 2005.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Harper of Gibson City, and Andy (Tim) Smith of Traverse City, MI; a son, Mike (Dee) Walter of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren: Becky (Darren) Hester, Beth (Rich) Baillie, Kirk (Amy) Arens, Anne (Nate) Cockerham, Tony (Jenni) Walter, Brian (Amy) Walter, Carrie (Kyle) Williams, Jim (Bonnie) Swanson, Mary (Andrew) Choquette, John (Tara) Swanson, and Jerry (Ashley) Swanson; 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Walter of Fort Wayne, IN. He was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

Dick graduated from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Air Force during WWII.

Dick was plant manager for 35 years at Central Soya in Gibson City, was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and served on the Gibson Area Hospital board for 39 years.

He was an avid woodworker who enjoyed making many treasures for his family to keep for years to come.

Memorials may be made to the Moyer Library in Gibson City.

NOTE: Full name per Indiana Birth Record is George Richard Walter. This is the name that is on his headstone, but other places he's listed as Richard C and George Richard.

Per 1940 census: parents George L.[error; should be "E" & Myrtle M. Walter; daughter Lois C.[error; should be "G"] age 29 (born c1911); son George C. [error; should be "G" and son John M. age 16 (born c1924).
