CARL M. HEARLD, 90, of Columbia City, died at 12:56 a.m., Sunday, May 27, 2007 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

He was born December 22, 1916 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of George Edward and Blanche (Mathews) Hearld. His formative years were spent on a farm west of Columbia City. He was educated at the Red Brush School and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1936.

He was first employed as a section hand on the Pennsylvania Railroad, then Columbia Woolen Mills for four years, Columbia Grain for seven years and then began farming east of Columbia City. He also drove Columbia Township School bus for 37 years.

On May 28, 1938 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Wenger. They lived on the Arthur Hancock farm most of their married life until their retirement in 1980 when they moved into Columbia City. Mrs. Hearld died July 1, 1987.

Following his retirement, he worked at Scott's part-time and Papa John's part-time.

He was a member of Oak Grove Church of God, Eagles #1906, served on Columbia City Council for eight years and the Planning Commission several years of which he was chairman for four years.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Carole (Lynn) Faulkner of Westerville, Ohio; three sons, Dennis (Beverly) Hearld, Randy (Janie) Hearld and David (Donna) Hearld, all of Columbia City; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville, Virgil and Kenneth; and two sisters, Olive Miller and Ruby Coy.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2007 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Steve Johnson, pastor of Oak Grove Church of God, officiating. The burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
