Renée Gilberte Juilette Surget Stewart, 96, of Columbia City, died at 2:00 p.m. (EST), Saturday, March 3, 2012, at her daughter Alice Kinzer's home in Beaverton, Oregon, where she had resided since 2010.

She was born on July 21, 1915, in Chailland, Mayenne, France, the fifth child of Louis and Marie-Louise Surget. Her formative years were spent in Paris, France where she attended and graduated as a Lab Technician from Scientia-Private School in Paris in 1937. She met Nathan Stewart in 1945 in Paris during World War II, and was united in marriage to Nathan on September 10, 1947 at the Church of the Brethren in Whitley County.

They lived in Memphis, TN after their marriage while Nathan attended the Southern College of Optometry, with Nathan graduating with Honors in 1951. After moving to Elkhart, Indiana for one year, they made their home in Columbia City in 1952 at 114 Hanna Street, where Nathan opened an Optometry Practice and Renee worked as a Lab Technician at the Linville Clinic. Renée and Nathan were married for 56 1/2 years before Nathan preceded her in death on January 23, 2004.

Renée is survived by her five children, Margaret Stewart Duncan, Alan Stewart, Alice Stewart Kinzer, Joanne Stewart Behm, Marc Stewart, 12 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.

Renée will be laid to rest with Nathan in a private ceremony without visitation, at the Christian Chapel Cemetery in Merriam Indiana.

Preferred memorials are to Alzheimer's Association.
