Worth Wilson Waugh, 99, of Columbia City, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, November 22, 2010 at Miller's Merry Manor where he had been a resident for the past few months.

He was born January 30, 1911 in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County a son of Charles Leigh and Ethel Gertrude (Humbarger) Waugh. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, he graduated from Columbia City High School in 1929 where he played football and was in the Junior Class play.

On December 16, 1941 he was united in marriage to Blanche A. Toucha. Mrs. Waugh died December 23, 1999. In 2000 he moved to Oak Pointe from his home of 54 years on Chauncey Street.

He served in the First Armored Division (Old Ironsides) of the United States Army in North Africa during World War II. He performed before King George and Queen Elizabeth in a demonstration of anti-tank weaponry putting 14 out of 15 shells in a moving target. He was honorably discharged June 23, 1945.

He was the third employee hired at Weatherhead, Columbia City from which he retired as tool room foreman in 1973.

Following his retirement, he and his wife became members of the Wally Byum Airstreem Club and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada in their Airstream trailer. In their latter years they wintered in the Airstream Trailer Park in Melbourne, Florida. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed netting shrimp.

His memberships also included First Church of God and American Legion Post #98.

Surviving relatives include a son, Richard (Lois) Waugh of Manson NC; two grandsons, Dan (Vickie) Waugh of Chapel Hill NC and Tim (Jennifer) Waugh of Mundelein IL; four grandchildren, Grace, Jacob, Emily and Samantha; and a niece, Ethel Ann Miller.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip R. Waugh and a sister, Ellen Waugh.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation after 12 Noon Saturday. The burial will be in Blue River Cemetery with military honors presented by Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.
