Clifford Deutsch, 91, died at 2:50 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2003 at Miller's Merry manor in Columbia City, where he had been a resident since December 2001. He was born May 17, 1911 in Larwill, a son of Frank E. and Clara Belle (Gebert) Deutsch.

In 1914 his family moved to a farm near New Haven and in 1921 to Collins. He completed his elementary education at Collins School and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1929. He was a member of the CCHS baseball team. After completing his education, he engaged in farming as an onion grower.

He was united in marriage to Velma L. "Bonnie" Judd on October 8, 1932. They made their home in Collins until 1942 when they moved to Columbia City. In 1947 they moved to Columbia Township. Mrs. Deutsch died March 22, 1980.

In 1941 he began his employment at Weatherhead, retiring in 1973 with 32 years of service.

On september 19, 1981, he was united in marriage to Ruby M. (Downing) Hilligoss. They made their home in Columbia Township until he became a resident of Miller's Merry Manor.

Mr. Deutsch was a member of Oak Grove Church of God and the church brotherhood, Whitley County Farm Bureau, Weatherhead Retirees Club and U.A.W. # 1407.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby, a resident at the United Methodist Home in Warsaw; two sons, Gary (Emily) Deutsch and Donald (Nancy) Deutsch; two daughters, Nancy (Ed) Line and Janice (Charles Lowe, all of Columbia City; two step sons, Rev. Larry Harvey of Marion and Dr. Walter Harvey of Denton, Texas; a step daughter, Wanda (Darryl) Lehnus of Waco, Texas: three sisters, Virginia Owens of Albion, Kathryn Nace and Isabelle Maggart, both of Columbia City; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; and eight step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Virgil and Lloyd Deutsch; and two sisters, Mable Henderson and Crystal Shively.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Rev. Mark Goeglein, pastor of Oak Grove Church of God, officiating. The burial will be in Oak Grobe Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
