Gordon Dent Chapman,age 96, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, December 14 at the home of his son, Chris, in Fort Wayne. He was born in Muscatine, Iowa on April 11, 1910 to Lewis LeRoy and Ada (Raber) Chapman.

He lived the majority of his life in Whitley County except for a period from 1930-1934 when he lived in Korea working for the Oriental Consolidated Gold Mining Company. He returned to Indiana by way of the Trans Siberian Railway across Russia, also traveling through Poland, Austria, Germany and Holland before returning to the United States via ship to New York City.

He was elected Whitley County Surveyor from 1938-1942 and then joined the US Army where he served from 1942-1945. Upon his return from the army, he worked as a general contractor until his retirement in 1972.

He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1929 where he played both football and basketball. Mr. Chapman was a guard on the first Columbia City basketball team to ever go to the state tournament in Indianapolis. He attended Purdue University from 1929-1930 and then again from 1935-1936.

On May 16, 1942 he was united in marriage to Helen Catherine Striggle in South Whitley, IN. She preceded him in death in 1997.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #98, the Rotary Club as well as Columbia City United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Toban (Jill) Chapman of Columbia City, Christian "Chris" (Debbie) Chapman of Fort Wayne and Dena (Ralph) Dickey of Warsaw; two grandsons, Timothy G. (Cassie) and Tyler J. Chapman. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, two sons, Timothy and Charles Chapman, two brothers, John and Gale Chapman as well as two sisters, Helen Rice and Lois Householder.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on the same day with the Pastor Barry Faucett of New Hope Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Chapman's memory to the Columbia City Peabody Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Note: As recently as December 2005 Gordon was living with his son Chris & wife Deb. He still got out and enjoyed the outdoors with a nice walk.
