Gerald Eugene "Dick" Deutsch at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 1986, at Parkview Hospital. Mr. Deutsch had been ill several months with lung cancer.

He was born March 1, 1907, in New Haven, to Frank E. and Clara B. Gebert Deutsch. His family moved to Smith Township, Whitley County, when he was a small child. Following graduation from Columbia city High School in 1925, Mr. Deutsch moved to California where he lived for 17 years.

In 1945 he returned to Indiana and lived a short time in Indianapolis before settling on a farm in Etna-Troy Township. The Deutsches came to Columbia City in 1953.

He retired in 1971 as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier. He first worked as a city carrier in San Francisco and from 1952 to 1971 was a rural carrier in Columbia City.

Mr. deutsch and the former Mable Irene Pence were married on July 13, 1946.

He was a member of Columbia City Elks Lodge 1417, Rural Letter Carriers Association and the Whitley County Farm Bureau. He formerly served as Columbia Township Assessor.

Surviving are his wife Mable; a daughter, Mrs. Clara McGee of San Francisco; a granddaughter Karen Holley and two great-grandchildren, Steve and Nicholas Schram.

Also surviving are three brothers; Lloyd of Farmersburg, Virgil of South Whitley and Clifford of Columbia City; five sisters; Mrs. Mable McIntyre of Keystone, Fla., Crystal Shively of Churubusco, Mrs. Wilmer (Katherine) Nace of Larwill, Mrs. Virginia Owen of Albion and Mrs. Ferrold (Isabelle) Maggart of LaOtto.

Friends may call at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. The service will be at the funeral home on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Douglas officiating.

Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery.
