Mel grew up in the Roanoke area before her family moved north of Columbia City to Tri-Lakes. She was involved with the Future Farmers of America group while attending Columbia City Joint High School. During her sophomore year, she was the Valentines' Queen and Robert E. Nulf quickly noticed her at the dance. Bob eventually started talking to her that night and soon began dating. Following her graduation with the Class of 1975, the two were married on August 30, 1975.

Being a hard and dedicated worker, Mel started working at Whitley Memorial Hospital as she attended high school. She showed dedication by working her entire career with the hospital and continued to work for the hospital at its newly opened facility in 2011, Parkview Whitley Hospital. In Mel's spare time, she loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed traveling to visit her son Brad as he was stationed throughout the United States as he served in the U.S. Air Force. She also enjoyed swimming and decorating.

It was shocking news to her family when they learned that she was being transported to the hospital where she was on her way to work at. ">
