He is predeceased by his parents, James and Wilhelmina Gambrell; a sister, Patricia Anne Gambrell; and his niece, Kelly (Gambrell) Clark.

He is survived by his current wife, Sue Allmon Gambrell; two stepsons, Lewis and (Sandra) Smoak (grandson: Justin) of Wake Forest, NC, David Smoak from NC; brother, James and (Carol) Gambrell; sisters, Susan and (Jerry) Stahl; Phyllis and (Mike) Shaffer; former wife, Elline Weiner; and their four children, Vernon and (Julia) Gambrell, Jr. of Lillington, NC, Juliana Gambrell of Newport Beach, CA, Christina and (Stephen) Morse of Aurora, NY, Melissa and (Walter) Baumann of East Farmingdale, NY; 10 grandchildren, Ameila and (Curtis) McKinney, Sandra, Angela and Sonja Gambrell; Eliana Martini, Lewis and Stephanie Morse, Robyn, Walter, III and Thomas Baumann; one great-grandchild, Kyra Gambrell.

Memorial Services will be held on April 9, 2005 at the Gordon Funeral Home in Mt Pleasant, NC.
