formerly of Columbia City, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Bethlehem Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation, Fort Wayne where he had been a resident for the past 4 years.

He was born July 10, 1923 in South Whitley, Indiana a son of the late George E. and Myrtle (Thompson) Walter. His formative years were spent in the Columbia City area where he graduated from Columbia City High School. He then attended Indiana University for 2 years.

On May 3, 1945 he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Strouse. They have always made their home in Columbia City. Mrs. Walter died November 21, 2011.

He worked for Thomson’s Whitley County Motors Sales as their parts manager. Later he moved to Don Ayres Motors, Fort Wayne.

Always putting family first, he enjoyed spending time with them camping or on their regular Sunday drives which often included an ice cream treat at an area drive-in. He was an avid IU basketball fan, enjoyed gardening and loved his cats.

He was a former member of the Tri-Lakes Baptist Church.

He is survived by his two daughters, Sue L. (Charles Bruce) Miller and Sally L. Gerdes, both of Fort Wayne and two grandchildren, Joy Miller and Ehren Gerdes.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Walter; 2 brothers, James and George Walter and 4 sisters, Mary Essig, Bonnie Taylor, Lois Walter and Jane Walter.

There will be no services. Arrangements are entrusted to Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Preferred memorials are to the Whitley County Humane Society or Parkview Home Health and Hospice.
