Phillip Kay Machlan, 34, of rural Columbia City, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, while fishing on the Manistee River in northern Michigan.

Born in Fort Wayne on Jan. 3, 1973, a son of Miles Porter and Donna Mae (Kunz) Machlan, he was raised in Columbia City and spent most of his lifetime in the Tri Lakes area. He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1991 and also received an associates degree as an electrician.

He married Heather M. Lemley on July 19, 2003 in Warsaw.

He owned Machlan Electric in Columbia City and was the maintenance man for the Senior Apartments in South Whitley.

A journeyman electrician, he enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley motorcycle and 4-wheeling.

Survivors include his wife, Heather; two sons, Michael Machlan and Christopher Machlan, both at home; his father, Miles Porter Machlan of Columbia City; a sister, Tamela M. (Doug) Rowe of Churubusco; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Mae Machlan, who died Sept. 17, 2007; and his grandparents, including William W. and Blanche O. Kunz and Nels and Marjorie Nelson.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City, with the funeral service following at 1 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Gordon Samra from Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Wayne will officiate. Burial is at St. Matthew's Cemetery, Columbia City.

Memorial bequests may be given in Mr. Machlan's memory to a trust fund established for his children. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
