James Todd Born, 58, of Wyoming, Michigan, died at UM Health-West Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan at 10:34 a.m. on April 25, 2023.

Born on June 13, 1964, in Columbia City, Indiana, he was a son of Larry E. and Barbara Lou (Wince) Born. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1982. In 1985 until 1991, he joined the U.S. Navy as a Fire Control Technician and was assigned to USS Callaghan DDG-994. Duties consisted of maintaining and operating shipboard weapons systems. He also received small arms qualifications.

He continued his education at Purdue University and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He then attended Western Governor’s University and received his Master of Science in Information, Security and Assurance in 2013. Jim loved to continue his education and was constantly challenging himself and learning in engineering and computer sciences.

In 2005 he joined VARtek as a network engineer supporting servers, software and operating systems. He then became an electrical engineer at Spartan Motors taking care of various projects. He lastly worked for Pike Engineering in Grand Rapids, as a valued team member.

Surviving is his wife, Yumin Cai; father, Larry Born; siblings, Jody (Brian) Hollenbaugh, Jill (Brad) Weikart, Jeana Born and Jonathan Born; niece, Chloe Weikart; step nephew, Preston Duncan and step nieces, Kathryne McNamee and Whitley Mikolay.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Born.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday May 1, 2023 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Blue River Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials in Jim’s honor are to the American Diabetes Association.
