Passenger is Killed When Car Goes Airborne, Hits Raber Bridge

Whitley County’s first 1979 highway fatality occurred at 1:35 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at Raber when Jerry Edward Clack, Pierceton, R. 2, was killed while a passenger in a northbound car driven by his brother, James David Clack, who survived the crash into a bridge abutment on Raber Road.

Jerry Edward Clack, 26, was born December 8, 1952 in Fort Wayne to James D. and Mary Jeanette Trautman Clack. His parents live at R 9, Westgate. The accident victim resided on Old Trail Road in Richland Township.

He was reared at Tri Lakes and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1971. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1972 and was discharged in 1976. He graduated from Midwestern Technical School with a major in tool and die design.

He was employed as an automatic machine setup man at The Weatherhead Company.

Mr. Clack was engaged to marry Miss Diane Elizabeth Shrock.

Survivors include the parents; two brothers, James David Clack, R 9 and Jeffrey Thomas Clack R 2; one sister Miss Mary Catherine Clack, Warsaw; a maternal step grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Trautman of Montpelier, Ohio.

Mr. Clack’s father will be remembered as former owner of J & J Hobies and Paint Shop. His mother is a teacher at Columbia Township School.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at J.A. DeMoney and Son Funeral Home. Friends may call there from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today. The Rev. James B. Willyard of the Columbia City United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in South Park Cemetery.
