Gregory G. Van, 67, died peacefully at his Tri-Lakes home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2019. He had been in declining health.

He was born in Noble County on December 19, 1951, a son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Bowman) Van. He spent his formative years in Thorncreek Township, graduating from Columbia City Joint High School in 1969. He then attended college at Indiana Central, Indianapolis. He made his first home in Spencerville, IN, then moved to Fort Wayne. From 1999 to 2009 he lived at Goose Lake and has since resided at Tri-Lakes.

Working in the Heating and Cooling business throughout his career, he was a field representative for Westfield Insurance. Previously he had worked for Van, Inc as an engineer/estimator, Redman Plumbing & Heating as a vice-president, and DVT Mechanical as an engineer/estimator. He was a member of the Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association.

Greg was an exceptional athlete, earning his reputation in high school on the CCJHS basketball and football teams. Mechanically inclined, he was an accomplished handyman. He enjoyed his leisure time on the water fishing.

He is survived by two sons, Christian G. (Kayla) Van and Trevor R. (Lauren Clark) Van, both of Auburn; two grandchildren, Vivien C. and Phoenix C. Van, both of Auburn; a brother, Michael T. (Debra) Van of Leesburg; and a sister, Nancy J. (Doug) McBride of Ossian.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie L. Van.

The funeral service is 4 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at Hively - St. Matthew Cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Children’s Autism Center, Columbia City.
