Notes:

Penny Lee Hoag, 58, a lifelong resident of Columbia City, died Sunday morning, Jan. 31, 2010.

She was born May 24, 1951 at Whitley County Memorial Hospital, Columbia City. She attended Marshall Memorial School, Coesse Elementary School and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1969.

She was married to Jerry Hoag in 1971 and established a home on South Walnut Street with Liz and Suzie Walker. Jerry and Penny later bought a house on Spencer Street, where they began their family and raised four children; Michelle, Jacob, Joseph and Jessica. Jerry and Penny later moved to their dream home west of Columbia City on her father's farm.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed life's simple pleasures, such as gardening, planting flowers, taking short day trips with her husband and spending time with her nine grandchildren. Penny was a loving mother and wife, who rounded her personality with a strong intellect and, at times, a playful, mischievous attitude. Because of her strong Christian values and beliefs, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now walking the streets of gold with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Jerry; two daughters, Michelle (Jeremy) Lahr and Jessie (Jerry) Weidner; two sons, Jake (Meggan) Hoag and Joe (Colleen) Hoag; her mother, Ellen Schaefer; three brothers, Gary (Stacey) Schaefer, Richard Schaefer, Joe (Jodi) Schaefer and nine grandchildren, all of Columbia City.
She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Schaefer, and brother, Russell Schaefer.

Visitation will be held at Smith and Son's Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a celebration of her life beginning at 7 p.m.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Whitley County Community Foundation designated for the Imagination Library Endowment Fund.
Condolences may be sent to www.smithandsonsfuneralhome.com.
