Douglas Ray Erne, 74, of rural Columbia City, died at 12:51 p.m. Sunday, December 15, 2019 at his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born May 22, 1945 in Columbia City, Indiana, a son of the late Harlo and Dorothy (Kiger) Erne. He grew up in Columbia City and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1964.

On July 1, 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He received his honorable discharge on September 1, 1967.

On June 7, 2002, he married Neita A. Phillips. They have always made their home in Whitley County. Neita died on March 16, 2008.

For 35 years, he was employed by Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne, in the manufacturing plant.

In his younger years, he liked riding his 1942 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the seasonal mushroom hunt. He and his wife were fond of traveling the states. Annually he planted a large vegetable garden and raised orchids throughout the year until he was unable. He then became talented at stain glass work with his prized peace being Jesus on the cross.

He is survived by two daughters, Julie M. (Jon) McCormick, Avilla and Charity L. Myers, Columbia City; grandchildren, Johnathon Myers, Krystal McCormick, and Jade McCormick.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Russell, and Paul Erne; and two sisters, Marjorie Hougendobler and Bonnie Blair.

The funeral service is 1 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
