Barry Ken Hurtt, 64
June 14, 1941 - April 1, 2006

Barry Ken HURTT, 64, of Cushing, Maine, former area resident died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at his Segochet home.

Born on June 13, 1941 in Huntington, a son of the late William O. and Grace F. (Fleck) Hurtt, he was a graduate of Columbia City Joint High School in Columbia City. A member of the Class of 1959, he graduated from Butler University in 1962 and Indiana State University in 1964.

On Aug. 29, 1964, he married Rita D. Conway in Terre Haute.

Through his career Mr. Hurtt worked with the National Foundation March of Dimes in Indianapolis and Chicago; Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital; Bloomington Hospital in Indiana; Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey; and Northeast Health in Maine.

Over the years Mr. Hurtt introduced the "Festival of Trees" as an annual event in Bloomington, Ind. and the Owls Heads Transportation Museum in Maine. He created the "Taste of New Jersey" and held many special events in New York City. He worked with then Governor Ronald Reagan in a special fund-raising campaign for Eureka College. He was instrumental in the creation of the Tomorrow Children's Fund at the Hackensack University Medical Center. He completed the Capital Campaign for Northeast Health and served as consultant for the Penbay YMCA Capital Campaign. He proposed and funded the Cancer Care Center at Penobscot Bay Medical Center and assisted in the formation of the Bob Gagnon Cancer Fund.

Mr. Hurtt was regional vice-president of the National Association for Hospital Development; state president of the Indiana Association for Hospital Development; a presenter at state and national conventions; Stakeholder in Northeast Health; member of Farnsworth Museum; member of Indiana State University and Indiana University Alumni Associations; member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

In addition to his wife of more than 41 years, Rita, he is survived by a daughter, Allison P. (Michael J.) Norris of Long Island, N.Y.; a son, Andrew O. Hurtt, a student at the University of Maine, Orono; two granddaughters; and a sister-in-law, Lynn Hurtt (Dan) Podraza of Chicago, Illinois

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday April 5, at St. James Catholic Church, Main Street, Thomaston, Maine. Interment will be at the convenience of his family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service, Waldoboro.
