Jerry Lee Shaffer, 75, a Washington Township, Whitley County native, died at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Oakbrook Village, Huntington where he had been a resident since April 22, 2009.

He was born September 2, 1937 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Landy and Cora (Hennemeyer) Shaffer. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He attended Lincoln School in Huntington and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1957.

On October 5, 1960 he was inducted in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged October 4, 1966.

He retired from Dana Weatherhead with 33 years of service and was an avid fisherman and wood worker.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Genevieve Kneller and a brother, Donald "Gene" Shaffer, both of Huntington; several nieces, Patty Cummins of Fort Wayne, Judy Richardson of Columbia City, Glenda Ray Elliott of Silver Lake, Donalyn Kneller of Huntington, Monica Earlywine of Indianapolis, Becky Krampen of Valparaiso, Kathy Smith of North Manchester, Penny Shaffer of Plainfield, Pam Emley of Roanoke, Paula Sturgill of South Whitley and Polly Cox of South Whitley; and nephews, Randall Trout of Fort Wayne, Dan Shaffer of Huntington, Dick Shaffer of Huntington, Lon Kneller of Sherman TX and Tom Kneller of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Joseph; and four sisters, Mae Hosler, Fae Freed, Ruby Trout and Janice Betten.

The visitation will be from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with the graveside service following at South Whitley Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to Operation Quiet Comfort (wounded warrior project).
