Phillip Dean Lemmon, 82, died at 12:00 a.m. Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Miller's at Oak Pointe where he had been a resident since November 1st.

He was born January 23, 1934 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Phil E. and Merle I. (Plummer) Lemmon. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1952. He continued his education at Moorehead State College in Kentucky.

Dean was inducted into the United States Army on October 13, 1954 serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged October 12, 1956.

On July 16, 1954 he was united in marriage to Ann J. White. They made their home in Columbia City with the exception of three years in Valparaiso. In August 2014 they moved to Sycamore Village. Mrs. Lemmon died December 21, 2015.

He was employed at Columbia Dairy for eights years, Indiana State Police from 1962 until 1983 as a trooper and later post commander, Essex Group in Fort Wayne from 1983 until 1997, Whitley County Consolidated Schools from 1997 until 2000 and Whitley County Sheriff Department as Director of Courthouse Security from 2000 until 2007. Following his retirement, he volunteered at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

His memberships included Grace Lutheran Church and Columbia City Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks #1417.

Surviving relatives include five children, Cathy (Michael) Schrader, Carla Schmitt, Stephanie (James) Wigent, Stephen (Brenda) Lemmon and Joel (Shannon) Lemmon, all of Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a brother, Jerry (Kathryn) Lemmon of Valparaiso.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two great grandsons and a brother, Dennie Lemmon.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery with Indiana State Police Color Guard presenting honors. The visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday with an Elk service immediately following at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Whitley County Reserves for Shop with a Sheriff or Heartland Hospice.
