Robert Leon Gibson, 73
May 22, 1931 - Oct. 6, 2004

Robert Leon Gibson, 73, of Columbia City, died at 1:44 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Born on May 22, 1931, a son of Jesse Edward and Myrtle Ilo (Ausmann) Gibson, he spent his entire lifetime in Whitley County, except for one year in Arizona.

He graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1949. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War, from Oct. 6, 1949 to Jan. 16, 1953. He was discharged as a seargeant.

On April 19, 1953 in Columbia City, he married Gloria Jean Watson.

He was employed for 30 years as a mechanic by the Ford Motor Company and he built race cars for 26 years, including stock cars, sprints and modifieds. He also owned and operated, with his son Matt, the Columbia City Auction Service. He was a member of the Indiana Auctioneer's Association and the American Legion Post 98 in Columbia City.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Cheryl (Keith) McDevitt of Columbia City; a son, Matthew (Dianna) Gibson of Columbia City; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Griffith of Huntington; and a brother, Lewis Gibson of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gloria J. Gibson, who died on Feb. 27, 2003; three sisters, Versa Cook, Helen Yeater and Pauline Weigold; and two brothers, Claris "Hoot" and Clifford Gibson.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr. in Columbia City. The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Oct. 9, 2004 at the funeral home with the Rev. J. Phillip Blake officiating. Burial is at Greenhill Cemetery in Columbia City, with graveside military rites being conducted by the American Legion Post 98.

Memorial bequests may be given in memory of Mr. Gibson to St. Jude's Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
