Notes:

Lois Wilson Tharp, 88, of Frankfort, IN and formerly of Muncie, IN, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on July 24, 2017. Friends may call at College Avenue United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 29, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Lunch will be provided back at the church after interment.

Lois was born on November 12, 1928 in Columbia City, IN, where her father taught history and she attended school. She spent the summers on the family farm near Cromwell, IN where her father farmed and raised cattle. Her mother was a pianist and organist who brought music into Lois’s life.

Lois attended the Indiana University Training School for Nurses where she earned her nursing degree. While in school, she met the love of her life, John Tharp, who was a medical student. They married shortly after graduation and started a family. John was commissioned in the United States Public Health Service and was posted in Chicago, Norfolk, and Detroit. Their first son, Stephen, was born in Norfolk. They later moved to Culver, IN to start a private practice and subsequently relocated to Xenia, OH. There, they had two more children, Tom and Sharon, while John practiced general medicine.

When John decided to specialize in Urology, they moved to Indianapolis for his residency and from there, settled in Muncie, IN.

Lois raised three children and was very devoted to her family. She always put them first and taught them to be responsible and caring like her. She was a good pianist and organist, played in the hand bell choir and sang in the choir at College Avenue United Methodist Church. She was very bright and perceptive about human nature and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a bit rebellious and feisty but always made her family feel safe and loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilfred and Beulah Wilson; her husband, Dr. John Tharp; her brother, Dr. John Wilson; and infant child, James; and a grandson, Brandon.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Stephen Tharp (wife, Susan), of Frankfort and Indianapolis, Major Thomas Tharp (wife, Debra), Lawrence, KS, and Dr. Sharon Tharp Hsieh (husband, Wing), Sioux City, IA; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren, who will all miss her love, laughter, and amazing wit very much.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1968 W. Main St., Muncie, IN 47303 or St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 1951 Wilshire Dr., Frankfort, IN 46041.

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at meeksmortuary.com.
