Philip E. Beard, 85, of Columbia City, died at 7:59 p.m. Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Hearth of Sycamore Village where he had been a resident since September.

He was born September 16, 1929 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a son of Alva C. and Edith J. (Hively) Beard. His formative years were spent in Larwill where he completed grade school before his family moved to Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City High School and Indiana University in Bloomington.

On June 19, 1954 he was united in marriage to Jessie L. Wilkinson. They made their home in the Columbia City area.

On September 5, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged August 31, 1959.

Phil served as a compliance officer for Lincoln National Life for 38 years, retiring in 1992.

He was actively involved in Columbia City United Methodist Church, Whitley County Literacy Council and Columbia City Housing Authority. Dedicated to serving his community, he volunteered at Whitley Memorial Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Whitley County Council on Aging.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Jessie; two children, Michael L. (Karen) Beard of Columbia City and Brenda K. (Abbey) Gross of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Courter, Jeffrey (Jessica) Beard, Ashley (Kevin) Eubanks, Kimberly (Jason) Lauer, Amanda Gross and Jaclyn (David) Flint; nine great grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas Beard of Sarona WI.

A half brother, Donald Beard, and two great grandchildren, preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Columbia City United Methodist Church, 605 Forest Parkway with visitation after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will also be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery with military honors presented by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Preferred memorials are to Columbia City United Methodist Church Building Fund, Whitley County Literacy Council and Visiting Nurse & Hospice.
