Juanita B. McConnell, 87, of Little Cedar Lake, died peacefully after a four month journey with cancer at 9:05 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since September 20th.

She was born September 16, 1927 in Columbia City, Indiana a daughter of John F. and Rosena A. (Hartman) Karst. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1945 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.

A nurse for many years, her working career included Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis, Illinois Research & Education in Chicago, office of Dr. Jerome Wait after returning to the Columbia City area and she retired from Whitley County Memorial Hospital in 1991.

On June 29, 1980 she married Robert L. McConnell. They always made their home at Little Cedar Lake. Mr. McConnell died January 18, 2010.

A member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, she also volunteered for many years at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

Surviving relatives include four children, C. Bryan Wait M.D. of Columbia City, Karen M. (Michael) Cook of Bloomfield, Mark A. Wait of Grovertown and Shawn D. (Teresa) Wait of Columbia City; a step daughter, Joyce PeGan of Arizona; 12 grandchildren; a step granddaughter; seven great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and a sister, Geraldine Reiff of North Webster.

Six brothers, Raymond L. Karst, Henry L. Karst, Frank L. Karst, Julius S. Karst, Robert E. Karst and Gerald Karst, and three sisters, Kathryn McCoy, Edna McCoy and Pauline Perry, preceded her in death.

The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 South Line Street, Columbia City with visitation after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church.
