PHYLLIS J. MANAGO, 82, former Head Librarian of the Peabody Library, died at 4:15 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2007 at Miller's Merry Manor where she had been a resident since February 2006.

She was born April 18, 1925 in South Whitley, Indiana a daughter of Buford and Ada (Merrick) Baker. Her formative years were spent in South Bend. When she was 5 the family moved to Columbia City where she attended elementary school and graduated from Columbia City High School. She attended Manchester College, North Manchester, IN and Library School in Indianapolis.

On September 7, 1946 she was united in marriage to Joseph B. Manago. He died in September 1993. They made their home in Columbia City.

In 1943, she began working at the Peabody Library until 1947, when she left to raise her family. In 1963 she returned to the library as Head Librarian until her retirement in 1990. She was a past President of the Small Town Library Association, treasurer of Indiana State Library Association 1970-71, associate member of Parliamentary Law and Literary Club, Delts At Large and Columbia City United Methodist Church.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Teresa (Robert) Kethcart, Columbia City and Judith Manago, St. Paul, MN; three grandchildren, Derik J. Geist, MD of Chicago, IL, Megan Graham and Kristen Graham of St. Paul, MN; a brother Richard Baker of Fort Wayne.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ricka Manago and a sister, Alice Walter.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m Monday, June 25, 2007 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. C. Jack Scott, officiating. The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 24th at the funeral home.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Peabody Library or National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
