Betty Jean Scrader Corbin, 84

Betty Jean Schrader Corbin, 84, a resident of Columbia Township, died at 9:35 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at The Oaks Living Center in Columbia City, where she had been a resident since September of 2003.

Born on Feb. 1, 1921, in Ohio, she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1938.

On Feb. 4, 1939, she was united in marriage to Denzil DeFoe Schrader. They made their first home on the Merritt Crowell farm in Union Township. In January of 1943, they moved to a farm on 400 East, which they donated to Purdue University in 1989. It is now the Northeast Indiana Purdue University Research Center.

In January of 1946, they moved to a farm on Raber Road in Columbia Township. For many years they rode and showed Tennessee Walking horses throughout the United States, earning top honors in many classes. Mr. Schrader died Aug. 27, 1990.

She was employed at Columbia Woolen Mill for several years. From 1972 to 1998, she traveled and assisted with the auction clerking process for Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company.

On June 3, 1994, she was united in marriage to William D. Corbin. They made their home on 100 South in Columbia Township.

Her memberships included Oak Grove Church of God, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School instructor and member of Mission Circle and W.C.S.C. She loved basketball and family activities.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Bill; a son, Rex Schrader of Columbia City; a daughter, Judy (Fred) Geyer of Columbia City; five step-daughters, Judy (Tom) Smith of Fort Wayne, Cindy (Jerry) Auer of Larwill, Susan (Russell) Swing of Lakeside, Calif., Janet Corbin of Wolcottville, and Joan (Bill) Sadilek of Monroe, N.C.; two step-sons, Larry (Susie) Corbin of Avilla, and Steven (Sue) Corbin of Columbia City; nine grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian Cearbaugh Gordan of Fort Wayne.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Oak Grove Church of God, 2426 S. Raber Road, Columbia City. The burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Oak Grove Church of God or Bear Lake Church of God Camp.
